What You Will Need to Get Rolling

  • CDL license.  To drive a Dump Truck, you’ll need a commercial driver’s license, For a truck that tows less than 10,000 pounds of Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, a Class B CDL will be required. Driving a Dump Truck that’s over 10,000 pounds of Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, you’ll need a Class A CDL.  A Class A allows you to operate a tractor-trailer Dump Truck too.
  • CBT Certificate.  Although it’s not mandatory, a CBT certificate is beneficial.
  • HAZMAT.  For some specialized jobs, you’ll need a HAZMAT certification.
  • Commercial Insurance.  Commercial insurance on your Dump Truck business is wise.
  • Tax ID.  A tax identification number (or the use of your Social Security number) is a requirement of being an independent contractor. 
  • Customers.  You won’t have much business unless you have customers. 
  • A Dump Truck.  Last, but certainly not least, you’ll need a Dump Truck to do your services with.
